We had a small victory this morning in helping Thandokuhle
feel comfortable near the ocean. We visited our local beach at low tide and
there are many exposed rocks that stop the waves from reaching the shore. This provides a great place to play with no
“scary” waves. So, for the first time
Thandokuhle was not upset when near the water.
She played in the sand and the little pools of water that formed around
the rocks. We didn’t have any sand toys
but a stick sufficed for drawing in the sand and poking at shells. It was nice
to see her having fun near the water without being upset. She was very aware of the rising tide
especially as a few waves starting coming in.
However, she was much more comfortable than our previous visits.
This afternoon we visited a local Farmer’s Market. The girls enjoyed the playground and I
enjoyed doing a little shopping.
Unfortunately, the side of our car had an accidental encounter with a
low pole which is never good in a rental car.
After the market we attended church with the social worker
from the adoption agency. Thankfully,
Miranda and Thandokuhle went together to the children’s service so I was able
to enjoy the church service without interruption. The church is very
supportive of visiting adoptive families and there are several local families who have adopted. In 2012 our sense was that interracial
adoptions were very uncommon in South
Africa due to the deep-rooted racial issues. So, it is encouraging to see that this is changing.
